Using LTI
Benchmark Universe is LTI Advantage (LTI 1.3) certified by 1EdTech and offers a Flexible LTI solution that is seamlessly integrated into any compatible Learning Management System (LMS). Schoology, Canvas, and BrightSpace are commonly used LTI certified LMS applications in K-8 education. LTI (Learning Tools Interoperability) is a technology standard developed by 1EdTech Consortium which easily allows a learning tool to be embedded into an LMS.
Benchmark’s Flexible LTI solution means that a district can roster their data into Benchmark Universe using Clever, ClassLink, or other supported methods and still have an LTI integration ‘on the side’ which allows for assignment deep linking and grade pass back from Benchmark Universe to the LMS.
To integrate your LMS with Benchmark Universe, please click the Submit a Ticket button directly below or the green Contact Us button in the lower right-hand corner to submit a ticket to a member of our Technical Support Team.
LTI 1.3 features
An LTI 1.3 integration gives the users two single sign-on access points into Benchmark Universe from their LMS, and activates features like assignment deep linking, grade pass back, and Names and Role Provisioning (NRPS).
The main access point is a link, usually called “Benchmark Universe”, found on a course homepage in the LMS. This access point lands the teacher or student on their Benchmark Universe dashboard.
The second access point allows for assignment deep linking. The placement may vary between LMS’s, but it is usually found in the Assignment section of an LMS course. When teachers use this link they land directly on their Benchmark Universe assignment creation page. Once the assignment is saved in Benchmark Universe, the assignment is sent into the LMS where it can be clicked by teachers and students in the class.
When the assignment is completed by the student, a grade will be passed back to the LMS and stored in the gradebook.

Names and Role Provisioning (NRPS)
Benchmark also offers a Rostering solution using LTI. Rostering data is stored in the LMS and would be the district’s data source of truth. This solution uses the Names and Roles Provisioning (NRPS) feature of LTI Advantage Services.
Using LTI as a rostering method differs from other data sync methods (Clever, ClassLink) as Benchmark does not receive access from the LMS to sync the data into our system all at once. So LTI rostering happens ‘on demand’ or on the user launches. On a teacher’s first launch into Benchmark Universe, the teacher associates the LMS class they are launching from to a school in our system. This launch passes data to our system which allows us to create the class and the user records for the teacher(s) and students in the class.
There are some limitations in using LTI for rostering, so Benchmark’s recommendation is to use one of our other supported rostering methods but integrate an LTI connection using our Flexible LTI solution.
